Martínez de Lizarduy won a gold medal in the ''49er class'' with Xabier Fernandez at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.〔(2004 Summer Olympics – Athens, Greece – Sailing ) – ''databaseOlympics.com'' (Retrieved on 23 May 2008)〕 The same pairing won the silver medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Iker Martínez was skipper for Team Telefónica in the 2011-2012 edition of the Volvo Ocean Race, with Fernandez also being a team member.
